Disaster Assistance Team
The Disaster Assistance Team works to
assist congregations and the presbytery with preparing for and responding to disasters (hurricanes, fires, floods, etc.) within the bounds of the presbytery so that the witness to Jesus Christ through New Hope Presbytery might remain visible in times of crisis.
The Disaster Assistance Team may be reached at any time by emailing disaster@nhpresbytery.org.
Preparation Resources
The Disaster Assistance Team encourages congregations to be ready for any disaster that may come their way.
- Review the Disaster Preparation Checklist for Local Congregations from Presbyterian Disaster Assistance.
- Share preparation information with your congregation so that individuals and families can be ready at home. www.readync.org is a great place to get started.
Hurricane Season Reminder
Now is always a good time to prepare for the next storm, named or not. Who will coordinate the church’s response? Have valuables been put away is a place safe from power failure or flooding? How will the leadership of the church communicate with the congregation? Do the families of the congregation have a safety and sheltering plan for themselves?
These are but a few of the questions that Sessions, pastors, staff, and members will need to have answered should a storm disrupt the normal activities of the church or the community. FEMA has cautioned us all to have a 72-hour supply of food and water, as well as a plan for our own safety should a disaster strike. If you bought jugs of water when a hurricane approached the coast…have they been replaced? If you bought new batteries for your weather radio, have you tested the batteries and the radio lately?
The big take away here is: Prepare now!
