 Roanoke Island Presbyterian Church seeks part-time Music Director

 

 

Position:  Music Director

Purpose

To coordinate the church music program in order to support and enrich the congregation’s worship of God, including accompanying worship services and directing the adult choir.  Worship at Roanoke Island Presbyterian Church is generally traditional yet informal and our music should reflect this.

Job Description:

·         Plan music and play the piano for the 10am Sunday morning worship service and other special services including Christmas Eve and Maundy Thursday.

·         Direct the adult choir, including conducting weekly choir rehearsal, utilizing the talents and skills of choir members and motivating and challenging choir members to lead the congregation in worship with commitment and excellence.

·         Work with the pastor in planning service and choir music.

·         Schedule and coordinate special worship music and soloists when the adult choir is not scheduled, utilizing the gifts of members of the congregation.

·         Provide for substitute when not able to be present (drawing first from congregation members).

·         Plan and direct special presentations of music such as concerts or cantatas, at Christmas, Easter, or other times.

·         Recruit members for the congregation to share their musical gifts as choir members, instrumentalists or in other ways.

·         Accompany church weddings and funerals as available (honorariums negotiated with families).

·         Maintain the church music library and acquire music as necessary within church budget guidelines.

  • A working knowledge of church music.
  • Ability to work with volunteers and committees.
  • Skills for researching music issues and programs related to people in the congregation and community.
  • Skills for researching issues involved in worship.
  • Sensitivity to what makes worship effective.

 

Accountable to: 

The Music Director is accountable to the Pastor and Session and his or her performance will be reviewed after six months, and then on an annual basis.  The Music Director will work with the Session to set annual goals for the position.

 

Compensation:

Salary:  $5,200 (paid biweekly)

Leave:  4 Sundays off

 

Budget:

$850 for worship and music (including piano tuning)
